Matthew A. Spivey

Matthew A. Spivey was born and raised in Kingsport, Tennessee. After attending college and playing baseball at Sewanee (University of the South) where he received a Bachelor of Arts (Magna Cum Laude) in Political Science and minored in Anthropology, he lived in Atlanta, Georgia for ten years. Matthew received his law degree (J.D.) from Emory University School of Law (With Honors) in 2006 and focused on complex commercial litigation, construction law, employment law, banking law and contract litigation for six years.

In 2012, he returned to Northeast Tennessee and joined the partnership of Spivey, King & Spivey, LLP. For over 12 years, he has focused on criminal defense, family law, divorce, child custody and personal injury throughout Northeast Tennessee. Handling Murder Trials, Sexual offenses, Vehicular Homicides, DUI's, Drug Charges, Aggravated Assault and White Collar offenses to their conclusion is his primary focus. Matthew has also counseled clients prior to any criminal charges being filed during the investigation stage of criminal cases, sometimes assisting in lessening criminal exposure and preventing unwarranted criminal allegations. In addition, he has tried numerous child custody, divorce and alimony related issues throughout Northeast Tennessee as well as handling personal injury and motor vehicle accident cases.

Unlike some lawyers, Matthew enjoys being in a courtroom and serving as a voice for those who at times may feel powerless against the government and state authorities. However, he also understands that a client's main goals, wishes and concerns have to be evaluated throughout their case and enjoys discussing options, along with explaining a client's legal rights, risks and potential outcomes.

Matthew feels that the main focus should be to ethically, zealously and respectfully attempt to achieve his client's goals throughout their case. Whether that results in a successful agreement, or requires a long jury trial, the concern and focus should be on the client's desired outcome. Matthew has been honored to serve on various boards and bar associations (Friends in Need, Tribe Baseball, Sullivan County School Board, NE Section of Federal Bar, Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (TACDL)) and to be selected into the Tennessee Leadership Law Program (2014), receive the Massey-McGee Trial Advocacy Award (2017) and be listed in Mid-South Super Lawyers from 2016-2024.
